Anonymous asked: Do you think the nomination of Tea Party backed senate candidate Christine O'Donnell over long serving Republican Mike Castle is a sign of internal divisions in the GOP? With Karl Rove openly criticising this result, will a rightward shift increase the GOP's chances at the next election or in fact benefit Obama instead?
Internal divisions during the primaries is almost inevitable in the US electoral system. What isn’t clear is whether the tea party movement will run third party or independent candidates, which would hurt the Republican vote, and/or whether disaffected tea party supporters will not turn out and vote for the Republican candidates. I still think when presented with the stark choice of voting Republican or Democratic, the tea party supporters will vote Republican (especially because the Democrats are the incumbents at the moment) and they will help the Republicans win back Congress in November.
