How about social media 'marketing' i.e. setting up (for example) a facebook group for each particular subject? Then students could join the group, comment, ask questions about the lecture material etc. Just a thought.

It’s an interesting idea and one I have flirted with before.  There are, however, a few problems with it.  First, that would require staff to join Facebook and I know many staff would not be prepared to do that.  Second, these groups are open and so you could have anyone joining them.  Third, people who are not on Facebook would feel disadvantaged.  Fourth, the university understandingly won’t let us use third party websites to deliver unit content when that same (or similar) functionality can be provided by Blackboard.
