Anonymous asked: In #LWB480 you said you think that the idea that people can expect their TV for free is something people need to get over - because the content providers deserve to be compensated for their work.
Now that there are more and more shows featuring "product placement" in addition to the advertising in traditional ad breaks - it could be argued that the creators are being compensated by virtue of the product placement (albeit to a lesser extent).
As in show adverting increases, and the revenue is filtered back to the artists creating the works, as opposed to providing a "cheaper" show for the networks - do you think in this respect there might be some future to downloading TV via torrents?
Additionally, do you think the TV networks fighting and not contributing are now just trying to save themselves instead of innovating a new advertising model (because they know they have left it too late and now would be the ultimate losers?)
I’m not sure that product placement is ever going to provide enough revenue to cover the costs of producing TV shows and movies. However, I do agree that the entertainment has been slow in innovating and coming up with new business models to support their industry. That said, some of the more recent innovations like iTunes, Netflix and Hulu, have been quite successful.
