I think it depends upon which country you are in; in some country same-sex couples have more or less the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, but in other countries that is not the case. In Australia, where after recent changes to the law same-sex couples have very similar legal rights as heterosexual couples, I would agree that the argument is less about equal rights but more about recognition and acceptance of homosexuality.
