Anonymous asked: Firstly, I like the new set-up! Secondly, you seem to advocate a career in academia (similar to many other academics I have spoken with). This seems to be more so than, say, if I am speaking to a lawyer. Is there a reason for this? Is there a shortage of academics at QUT? Do you simply love your job more than lawyers? Can you convince me to follow the academia path as opposed to a law firm? Thanks!

I think it is fair to say that most academics love their job more than most lawyers in law firms.  I think that is because being an academic really is a wonderful privilege - you get to teach and research the things that interest you, instead of what a client tells you to work on; you get flexible working hours; and you get to work with many great people, who are often in equal parts brilliant and eccentric.  There is no shortage of academics at QUT - indeed it is increasingly competitive to get a job as an acedemic - but I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in teaching and writing.
