looking back at my new year’s resolutions for 2011

last year i posted a list of my new year’s resolutions for 2011.  in the interests of transparency, i thought i would post an update on how i went in 2011 with respect to each of those resolutions:

1. lose weight - achieved

i didn’t do very well with this resolution until the last few months of the year.  for most of the year i actually put on a little a more weight, before losing 11kg in the last two months of 2011.  so i think i made some progress towards this goal in 2011.  however, in 2012 i intend to lose much more weight again.

2. master how to cook a souffle - fail

once again i never got around to cooking a souffle this year.  maybe in 2012 …

3. read more fiction - fail

i know i was only planning to read at least one fiction book a month, but i still failed to achieve that this year.

4. write three c1 peer refereed articles - fail

i only wrote two c1 peer refereed articles this year.  three was probably a little ambitious, so i’m still quite happy with my research output this year.

5. continue to build my media profile - achieved

i didn’t write as many op-ed pieces as i planned this year but i managed to build my media profile with more regular television and radio appearances, as well as regularly being interviewed by some of the leading print newspapers.

6. try and rediscover my love of teaching - achieved

i was very happy with how my teaching went in 2011.  i received the best teaching evaluations of my academic career, and i was pleased with the curriculum design changes i made to constitutional law.

7. become more politically active - achieved

i still think politics is in my future somewhere.

so four out of seven isn’t that bad really.
