Anonymous asked: Im curious about marking university exams. Surely with the sheer volume of responses you have to mark, all on the same subject matter, they must all blend in to each other at some point and be difficult to accurately mark. Does it become hard, even at an unconscious level, to remember where one ended and the next one started. Is there anything lecturers do to help in this regard?
You’re right it can become hard but there a variety of things we can do to ensure we remain fair when marking. First, most of us take a short break after marking every half dozen or so exam papers. This helps us remain fresh and alert when marking every single answer. Second, we tend to go back and regularly check answers we have marked on other days to ensure that we are being consistent. Third, there is always a process of moderation, which usually includes a colleague looking over our marking, to once again make sure we are being as fair and consistent as is humanly possible.
